Partnering with Pilot ButteYears ago a group called Pilot Butte Partners came up with a way of helping the Butte that was pretty much leaderless. If you wanted to help the Butte you became a "partner" and that meant you were part of the gang. You might be there to helps others and there were always opportunities. You might have a fresh idea and the initiative to make it happen. The other partners would consider it, make suggestions, and so on. If the idea had legs, you'd know what you were doing pretty fast. The key was you wouldn't be going it alone. The group would give you all the help needed to get off to a great start and be successful. We're using a partners model that is much like what was done back then but modernized to fit the system that exists today. You're gonna love it!

Two new nonprofits are being created, each with very targeted missions. The names are just suggestions at this time.

Do you enjoy gardening and/or landscaping? Then this may be for you. This team is focused on growing and then planting genetically adapted plants on the Butte. It's an awesome state of the art process that doesn't require watering, naturally resists invasive plant species, naturally spreads across the Butte, and deters off trail hikers. It's the best way to beautify the Butte and while a green thumb helps, it's not required. Landscaping will sometimes be involved to. The expertise is provided by Wintercreek Restoration, the western United State's leader in natural restoration.

Notice how we didn't use the term "volunteer coordinator." Helping the Butte is not a single team approach. The job here is more of a welcome person. When a person or a group wants to help, you might be their first contact. You get to know them and they learn how things generally work. It's a fun job for people who enjoy talking with others and are at least somewhat organized. You learn a simple system and you're ready to go. Then everyone doing this job learns from one another over coffee on occasion. Support for what you do is in abundance because almost everyone helping the Butte directly needs your help getting people plugged in to what they are doing.

People are needed to do specific tasks. Most don't take a lot of time and usually only one or two people are needed. An example might be a person who maintains mailing lists like the one below. When someone submits an "I want to help" form, many things happen. One is we keep a basic database of that information. It's a simple task that can be done in your spare time. There are many tasks of this nature. While some are mainly clerical, others happen out on the Butte. If you like being responsible for something important, let us know and we'll find something you like to do.

Ways to help without volunteeringVolunteering isn't for everyone. If it's not for you, just go back to the "Help the park" option to find a ton of other ways to help. Some people will pick one option and others might do many. Whatever best works for you.
People often feel a connection to the Butte and maybe some of these suggestions will make your connection stronger. Connect with nature and awesome people and you win. Pilot Butte wins too because the more who connect the easier it is to get things done. It's really that simple. True story (Find your niche)About 10 years ago trash was everywhere on Pilot Butte. Then 80 year old John Kerstetter started bringing the yellow bag his newspaper came in and filled it with trash on his daily walk to the summit. He's a quiet man and hardly said a word. People noticed what he was doing and started picking up trash too. Pretty soon the people leaving the trash stopped. Many years later there was no trash problem to speak of. John is now 90 and still walks the Butte every day with his yellow newspaper bag. It's often empty at the end of his hike and rarely is it even half full. Find your niche. Make a difference.
