Small gestures can make big things happen
What one man can do
We've mentioned elsewhere that one man picking up litter in a small bag solved a big litter problem in the park about a decade ago. Once he accomplished that, John went to work on off trail hiking and reduced it by nearly 50 percent all by himself, He was 80 when he started. He's 90 now and still doing things that help the park during his daily walks to the summit. John says, "Just look for something you can do while you're there. You're sure to find something and doing it will help." |
Get creative
Look around and you'll find ways to help, maybe even one that's new. Everett Gloe was always helping the park in some way. When his health started failing, he became a master at improvisation. Just before his death, he found he could kick small rocks off the trail. Most people didn't know he was doing it until about a month after he passed. The trail was noticeably different and people were again slipping and falling on the steeper sections. Now many kick a rock off for Everett when they hike. It's become a tradition among the old-timers and those who hear the story. |
